Do a 15-minute sweep before free pickup. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, and anything personal or valuable. Check under seats, in visors, pockets, the console, trunk, and spare-tire well. Factory-reset the infotainment system so Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink, saved addresses, and your saved home location are gone. Do not pack away the handoff items: leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security access items
Start with anything that opens a door or gives access to your property. Remove the garage-door remote, gate fob, office access card, spare house keys, mailbox keys, storage-unit keys, and any valet key you do not intend to donate. Check the driver door pocket, cupholders, visor clip, ashtray, and center console. Put these items in your house, not in a bag inside the vehicle.
Stop billable account links
Take out the toll transponder or sticker before the vehicle leaves. Then log in to the toll account and remove this vehicle from the account, or call the toll agency if the tag is not removable. Also pull parking permits, employee lot passes, neighborhood decals, and disability placards. These items can keep billing or access tied to you after donation.
Clear the glovebox documents
Open the glovebox and pull your insurance card, registration, maintenance receipts with your address, loan papers, old sale documents, and any printed navigation directions. Keep anything with your name, address, policy number, account number, or signature. If a document is needed for the donation, place it with your signed title instead of leaving it loose in the glovebox.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Work front to back. Check under both front seats, between seat cushions, seat-back pockets, floor mats, door pockets, visors, sunglass holders, the center console, charging ports, and the rear cargo area. Then check the trunk, tool tray, cargo side bins, and spare-tire well. Look for cash, cards, medication, sunglasses, work badges, keys, phone cables, garage receipts, and children’s items.
Wipe stored vehicle data
Before you hand over the keys, wipe stored data from the infotainment system. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call logs, contacts, saved addresses, garage-door HomeLink settings, Wi-Fi hotspots, and the saved home address in navigation. If the system offers a factory reset, use it. If you cannot reset it, manually delete each phone and address you can find.
Remove add-ons, leave essentials
Remove aftermarket items only if you can do it safely and the vehicle still matches what you described. Dash cams, phone mounts, upgraded stereos, child seats, emergency kits, and personal tools are common removals. Do not strip parts, remove factory equipment, or leave loose wires. Final handoff check: leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
California paperwork reminders
Do not hide the title in a folder you are taking back inside. The signed-over title should stay with the vehicle so the pickup paperwork can be completed correctly. In general, title rules are controlled by the state, and signatures, liens, and multiple-owner titles can change what is needed. If anything on the title is unclear, follow California DMV instructions before signing. For license-plate questions, use our separate guide, California License Plates After Donating a Car. Common questions
Should I remove my registration and insurance card?
Yes. Remove your insurance card, registration copy, and any glovebox papers with personal or account information. Keep them with your own records unless Gear Up Give Back specifically needs a document for the handoff. The signed-over title is different; it should stay with the car, along with the keys.
Can I remove a dash cam, stereo, or child seat?
Yes, if the item is yours and removal does not damage the vehicle or change what you described. Dash cams, child seats, phone mounts, and personal tools are usually fine to take. Avoid removing factory parts, cutting wires, or taking equipment that was included when you described the vehicle.
What if I cannot factory-reset the infotainment system?
Do the best manual wipe you can. Delete paired phones, contacts, call history, saved addresses, garage-door HomeLink settings, Wi-Fi networks, and the saved home address. If the screen is dead or locked, remove personal items from the cabin and keep a note for your records that the reset was not available.
What items are okay to leave in the car?
Leave the keys and the signed-over title. Normal factory equipment can stay, such as the owner’s manual, factory floor mats, spare tire, jack, and built-in tools. Do not leave wallets, documents, medicine, electronics, cash, toll tags, permits, or anything you would not want handled by someone else.
More donation prep guides
Before your vehicle leaves the Modesto Metro, take the last minute to look in the console, trunk, and navigation screen one more time. Gear Up Give Back can accept the car with normal factory equipment, keys, and the signed-over title. Your donated vehicle supports Heritage for the Blind (EIN 58-2164446). When your sweep is done, keep your removed items together and move ahead with your donation.
