Live in Modesto and wondering if car donation pickup is really free near you? With Gear Up Give Back, it is. We come to your home, workplace, or storage lot anywhere in the Modesto Metro—Downtown Modesto, Village One, La Loma, Coffee Road corridor, Riverbank, Ceres, Salida, and beyond. There is no tow fee, no surprise charges later, and no hauling it across town. Our charity covers the towing cost from the proceeds when your vehicle is sold, never from your pocket.
Here’s how it works: you call us or submit the online form, we confirm a pickup window that fits your schedule, and a local flatbed or hook-and-chain tow truck comes to you. The vehicle can be running, not running, or missing a few parts. On pickup day, just leave the signed California title and keys with the car (or meet the driver if you prefer). In most Modesto-area neighborhoods and nearby communities, a tow partner can usually get to you within a few business days, depending on routing and how rural your address is. It’s simple, local, and genuinely $0 to you.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and where it’s parked
Start by calling Gear Up Give Back or filling out our secure online form. Share your Modesto-area address (home, work, or storage), plus basic vehicle details and whether it runs. Let us know if you’re in an apartment complex, tight alley, or driveway off streets like McHenry, Briggsmore, or Yosemite so we can match the right tow truck.
2. Choose a pickup window that fits your schedule
We’ll look at local tow routes across the Modesto Metro—Downtown, Salida, Ceres, Riverbank, Empire, and nearby areas—and offer you a pickup window. Most donors get a slot within a few business days. You don’t need to clear a full day; just pick a window that works, and we’ll coordinate with our towing partner for that time frame.
3. Prepare your title, keys, and vehicle location
Before pickup, locate your California title and remove personal items from the car. If possible, park it where a flatbed can access it, such as along a curb, driveway, or open lot space. You can be present to hand the driver the signed title and keys, or leave them in a pre-agreed secure spot if you can’t be there.
4. Tow truck arrives and handles all the heavy lifting
A local towing partner from the Modesto area will arrive in the agreed-upon window with a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck. They’ll load your vehicle—running or not—and complete a quick pickup receipt. There’s no payment or paperwork fee. The entire process usually takes just a few minutes once the truck is on-site.
5. We process your donation and mail your tax receipt
After pickup, Gear Up Give Back arranges the sale, and proceeds help support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. You’ll receive a tax receipt, usually reflecting at least $500. If it qualifies above $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C when you file. Keep this with your records for your federal tax return.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight Modesto streets, alleys, and apartment parking
Tip: Streets and lots off Downtown Modesto, La Loma, and near Modesto Junior College can be narrow or crowded. If your car is in a tight alley or tandem space, let us know in advance so we can plan the right truck and loading approach.
Gated communities, storage yards, and HOA rules
Tip: If you’re in a gated community in Village One, near Orchard Supply/Plaza areas, or a fenced storage yard, please provide gate codes, contact info for on-site security, or HOA rules. Without that access, tow drivers may have to reschedule, delaying your pickup.
Very rural or farm properties outside the Modesto core
Tip: Addresses out toward Oakdale, Waterford, Keyes, or rural roads past Salida may take a bit longer to route. Make sure driveways are firm enough for a flatbed and share any low-clearance bridges or tight turns so we can set realistic timing.
Missing title or incorrect California paperwork
Tip: In California, a proper title is important for a smooth transfer. If you can’t find your Modesto-registered title, mention this when you schedule. We can walk through options, but missing paperwork can slow processing and your tax receipt.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky—maybe your HOA won’t allow tow trucks at certain hours, your car is buried behind other vehicles, or your street near Downtown Modesto or along Tully Road is too tight for a flatbed—talk with us about alternatives. In some cases, we can coordinate pickup from a nearby public street, a friend’s driveway, or a local storage lot where you can safely move the vehicle. We’ll work within Modesto-area realities to find the simplest way to get your car donated with no cost to you.
Modesto pickup coverage
Gear Up Give Back serves the entire Modesto Metro, including Downtown, La Loma, Village One, Northeast Modesto, Airport District, Salida, Ceres, Riverbank, and nearby communities like Empire and Hughson. In denser neighborhoods, pickups can often be routed within a few business days; more rural stretches of Stanislaus County may take a bit longer depending on tow-truck availability. For California donors, sign your CA title as the seller and remove personal plates if you want to keep them, then notify the DMV of the transfer once the vehicle is picked up.
