If you’re in the Modesto Metro with a car that has no keys and no title, you can still donate it through Gear Up Give Back. Missing keys alone are not a deal-breaker. The important part is getting a California duplicate title in your name. Once that’s in your hands, we handle free towing of your keyless vehicle and you still receive a tax-deductible receipt for your donation benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in California: you’ll apply for a duplicate title with the DMV before we complete your donation. That usually means a small fee and a short wait while Sacramento processes it. When your new title arrives, you sign it over to us. At that point, we schedule free pickup anywhere in the Modesto Metro—whether you’re in downtown Modesto, Salida, Ceres, Riverbank, or near the Vintage Faire Mall. Our tow partners use flatbed trucks that can load and move a vehicle without keys, as long as they can physically access it. You just need to tell us up front that the car has no keys so we send the right equipment.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your vehicle and Modesto location qualify
Make sure the car is in your name and physically located somewhere a tow truck can reach—driveway, curb, parking lot, or yard in the Modesto Metro (Modesto, Ceres, Salida, Riverbank, nearby communities). Even if it doesn’t run, hasn’t moved in years, or is stuck without keys, we can usually accept it if a flatbed truck can get to it safely.
2. Apply for a California duplicate title first
Because your title is missing, your first step is the California DMV. Apply for a duplicate or replacement title in your name. In most cases there’s a small fee and a processing time that can range roughly from 1–4 weeks. You can start the process online, by mail, or at a local DMV field office, then wait for the new title to arrive at your address.
3. Contact Gear Up Give Back while the title is processing
You don’t have to wait in silence. Reach out to Gear Up Give Back and let us know you’ve started the duplicate title request. We’ll answer questions, note your Modesto-area location, and flag your donation as a keyless vehicle. That way, when your title arrives, we can move quickly to schedule towing with the right type of truck and gear.
4. Receive your duplicate title and sign it over
When your new California title arrives from the DMV, check that your name and the vehicle information are correct. Then sign the title where indicated to transfer ownership to Gear Up Give Back/Heritage for the Blind. We’ll explain exactly where to sign and what to have ready so there are no surprises when the tow driver arrives for pickup.
5. Schedule free keyless pickup anywhere in Modesto Metro
With the signed title ready, we’ll schedule your free tow. Tell us again that the car has no keys and whether it rolls, steers, or is blocked in. Our towing partners bring a flatbed truck that can load a car without keys. We pick up from homes, apartments, and businesses across Modesto, Ceres, Salida, Empire, and nearby towns at no cost to you.
6. Hand off the title and get your tax receipt
At pickup, you’ll hand the driver the signed title and any other requested paperwork. Once the donation is complete and the vehicle is processed, you’ll receive a tax receipt. In many cases it will show at least a $500 deductible value; if the IRS requires it, you’ll use Form 1098-C. Your no-keys, no-title headache is gone, and you’ve helped support services for people who are blind.
Potential complications to watch for
The DMV shows a different owner or a lienholder
Tip: If the DMV records don’t list you as the current owner, or there’s still a lienholder on record, the duplicate title request can be delayed. You may need a lien release or additional documents. Ask DMV what’s required before you apply so you don’t have to repeat paperwork or make multiple trips.
Vehicle can’t be reached safely by a tow truck
Tip: A flatbed can move a car without keys, but it still needs physical access. If the car is blocked by other vehicles, behind a locked gate, or sunk into dirt, let us know. You may need to clear space, unlock access, or be present with gate codes so the driver can load it quickly and safely.
Waiting too long to start the duplicate title process
Tip: The title—not the keys—is what usually slows donations down. If you wait until you’re in a hurry to remove the car, the DMV processing time can be frustrating. Start your duplicate title request now, even if you’re not scheduling towing yet, so you’re ready to donate as soon as it arrives.
Missing or mismatched ID at pickup
Tip: At pickup, the name on the title should match the person signing it and your identification. If the vehicle is in a spouse’s or relative’s name, plan ahead for who will sign, or ask about a power of attorney if needed. Having the right ID ready keeps your Modesto pickup quick and smooth.
